Digestibility Level: Limited

Beef Knees are a very hard, dense bone-based recreational chew. Unlike our softer natural treats, they are not intended to be consumed quickly or eaten as a food treat.

The surrounding dried beef tissue can be chewed and may be consumed, but the hard bone itself should not be considered fully digestible. How much of the chew your dog consumes will vary according to their chewing style and how they use the individual piece.

We recommend:

• Offering for supervised chewing sessions of around 20 minutes* as a practical guideline, rather than leaving continuously available.

• Offering occasionally rather than daily.

• Choosing an individual Beef Knee that is an appropriate size and shape for your dog.

• Always supervising your dog while chewing and never leaving your dog unattended with a Beef Knee.

• Observing how your dog uses the chew and remove it if they begin aggressively biting down on the bone or attempting to break off large pieces.

• Removing the chew if it becomes damaged, develops sharp or loose pieces, or becomes small enough for your dog to swallow.

• Providing access to fresh drinking water.

• Counting any edible material consumed as part of your dog's overall treat allowance.

  
  

*There is no fixed “safe” chewing time for a hard bone. Around 20 minutes is a practical session guideline, not a guarantee of safety. Individual dogs use hard chews very differently. Observe your dog throughout the session and consider stopping and removing the chew if they begin aggressively biting down on the bone, attempting to break off large pieces, or showing signs of discomfort.

Important: Beef Knees are exceptionally hard. Hard bones can cause tooth fractures, and swallowed pieces can present choking or digestive-tract risks. If your dog breaks or cracks a tooth, or swallows a large piece of bone, contact your vet for advice.

• Dogs with healthy adult teeth and no known dental problems.

• Dogs who are accustomed to natural chews and do not aggressively bite down on very hard objects.

• Dogs for whom the individual piece is an appropriate size and shape.

It may not be suitable for:

• Dogs under 12 months of age. 

• Dogs with damaged, weakened or painful teeth.

• Dogs who have previously fractured a tooth or have been advised by their vet to avoid hard chews.

• Dogs who aggressively bite down on very hard chews.

• Dogs who are likely to swallow a piece whole or attempt to gulp large chunks. 

• Dogs with a known beef allergy or sensitivity

Important: 

Beef Knees contain extremely hard bone. Their compact, dense shape means that although individual pieces are substantial in weight, they are not necessarily large in the mouth. Always choose a piece appropriate for your individual dog and supervise closely throughout chewing. Remove the chew if it becomes damaged, develops sharp or loose pieces, or becomes small enough to swallow. Hard bones can also cause tooth fractures.
