Natural doesn't automatically mean suitable.

ALPHA ACADEMY

We love natural dog treats at Alpha.

But there's something we think is important to say:

The word “natural” doesn't automatically make a treat the right choice for every dog.

When choosing a treat or chew, there's more to consider than what's written on the front of the packet.

So what should you consider?

Your dog's age

A treat that may be appropriate for an adult dog isn't necessarily appropriate for a young puppy.

Puppies are still developing, and their size, teeth, chewing ability and nutritional needs change rapidly as they grow.

That's why at Alpha we don't simply look at whether a treat is “natural”. We also consider the age suitability of the individual product.

Your dog's size.

A tiny dog and a large dog don't necessarily need the same type or size of chew.

The physical size of the treat matters, as does how easily your dog can manage it.

A treat that's appropriate for one dog may be awkward or unsuitable for another.

How your dog actually chews.

This is a big one.

Two dogs of the same size can be completely different chewers.

Some carefully work away at a chew.

Others seem determined to swallow things as quickly as humanly possible!

Your dog's individual chewing behaviour should therefore form part of your decision when choosing a chew.

And, as with any chew, dogs should be supervised while enjoying it.

Careful chewer... Enthusiastic chewer...

Two dogs can enjoy natural chews in completely different ways.

Some dogs carefully work away at a chew, while others tackle them with considerably more enthusiasm! Your dog's chewing behaviour is one of the things worth considering when choosing an appropriate chew.

Texture and hardness.

Natural doesn't tell you whether something is soft, crunchy, fibrous, chewy or very hard.

Those differences matter when choosing a chew. Your dog's size, chewing behaviour and individual circumstances should all be considered, particularly when choosing a harder chew.

Natural doesn't automatically mean suitable; the characteristics of the actual treat matter too.

So rather than simply asking:

“Is this natural?”

it's worth asking:

“What is this treat actually like, and is it suitable for my dog?”

Digestibility.

Different treats can place different demands on your dog's digestive system.

A new treat can also cause problems if it's introduced too quickly, particularly in dogs that are prone to tummy upset.

Veterinary guidance recommends introducing new treats gradually and trying a small amount initially if a dog is prone to digestive upset.

That's one of the reasons we've introduced our Light, Moderate and Heavy Digestibility categories at Alpha.

They're not intended to tell you that one category is universally “better” than another.

They're there to help you understand what you're choosing.

What else is your dog eating?

Treats are still part of your dog's overall diet.

Veterinary nutrition guidance generally recommends that treats and snacks make up no more than around 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake, with the remainder coming from their main diet.

That doesn't mean every dog needs exactly the same number of treats.

A dog's calorie needs vary according to factors such as their size, activity and individual circumstances.

And if your dog has a medical condition, food sensitivity or is eating a veterinary-prescribed diet, it's particularly important to check with your veterinary team before introducing treats.

So, what's the “best” natural treat?

Here's the answer we think is much more useful than simply naming one:

There isn't one perfect natural treat for every dog.

The better question is:

“Which treat is appropriate for my dog?”

At Alpha, that's why we try to give you more information than simply a product name and a photograph.

We want you to know:

✔️ Who it's suitable for

✔️ What the texture is like

✔️ How substantial the chew is

✔️ How we classify its digestibility

✔️ How long it may last

✔️ What we know about its nutritional profile

Because choosing a natural treat shouldn't be a guessing game.
